For the briefest of moments I held a copy of The Light of Burning Shadows in my hands

And being a guy head over heels in love I did what any author would do with the first copy of his brand new book – I gave it to my girlfriend 🙂

Here’s a sneak peek of the first box just opened by my editor as a tease…

    Chris,
I read your interview in the OWW newsletter and added you to my friends list to follow your ongoing saga. It’s always encouraging to see somebody work hard and succeed. Congrats on the trilogy and good luck with the sales.

BTW, the book covers are awesome. I like what you did with the first book.
    Cheers,
    Dave

      Hi, Dave:
I especially enjoyed doing that interview as I really did get my start at OWW. It was amazing to me how much I thought I knew before I joined compared to how much I had to learn once I did. And, naturally, I’m still learning. What about yourself? Your profile says you’re writing, too. What are you working on?

Thanks, I’m thrilled with the covers. If cats bought books I think I’d be an instant bestseller because the foil used on these really catches the light and makes them shine. Nothing like grabbing eyeballs when you walk into a store.

      Cheers,

      Chris

I’ve got a dark fantasy novel that I started in ’07 that is currently being read by beta readers. It’s about a former assassin trying to find redemption in the eyes of a priestess while she prevents the return of a race banished to the underworld. I’m hoping to start sending it to agents by the fall.

In the meantime I’m drafting a new novel about a peaceful scholar who kills another contestant in a wrestling match and ends up reluctantly leading a berserker unit in the army. For that one I’m trying to place it in a bronze age period in an empire that is a combination of Norse, Greek and middle-eastern cultures.

I noticed you edit non-fiction history. That must be a lot of fun. What are you working on these days, or is that another blog entry?

Anyways, Happy 4th of July, and happy belated Canada Day (curious about where you were born. I’m a Winnipeger in Connecticut).

        Cheers,
        Dave

Best of luck with the dark fantasy and your second novel (which has a decidedly different approach which should be a help when you start submitting it).

I absolutely love working with my authors in the field of history and current conflicts. I had worked as a historian before switching to commercial publishing so editing nonfiction books in the field has been wonderful. As a matter of fact, I will be blogging early next week about my latest book, The Girls Come Marching Home by Kirsten Holmstedt. This is a follow up to our big hit in 2007, Band of Sisters. It looks at the aftermath of war as these women warriors come back to the US. It’s gut-wrenching and deeply emotional. The stories are raw and in some cases shocking and they needed to be told.

Same to you! I was born in Toronto, did my undergrads in Ottawa at Carleton, and then moved to Kitchener-Waterloo for my Masters before coming to New York. It’ll be nine years this fall that I’ve been south of the border. When people ask me now what nationality I am I tell them Canerican 🙂

      I’m learning 🙂

I want a copy, too! For the few minutes we had the two books propped up on the counter side by side it was soooo cool.

      Hope your 4th was fun!

      Cheers,

      Chris

My sentiments exactly. And should you ever be stranded on a deserted island with this book the cover will make a terrific fish lure 🙂 You can’t see it well in this photo, but it’s very shiny.
